In the second month, he reduced his intake to leaves, and by the third month, he no longer picked fresh leaves but only used fallen ones. In the final month, he sustained himself purely on air, minimizing his breath until he stopped breathing altogether.
By that time, Dhruv had achieved such deep unity with God that he felt at one with all of creation. As he reduced his breathing, others nearby began to choke. Concerned, they called out to the supreme God, Lord Narayan, asking what was happening. Lord Narayan calmly explained that it was the result of Dhruv’s intense austerities and reassured them not to worry.
When Dhruv opened his eyes and saw Lord Narayan before him, he was struck with awe and had no words to express his devotion. For a full half hour, Dhruv stood silently, his hands folded in reverence. God then told Dhruv that he would return to his father’s kingdom, where he would rule for many years, but once his reign was complete, he would ascend to Dhruvalok, a divine realm, where he would shine eternally as the North Star.
