The Divine Promise and the Marriage of Kardamb Muni and Devahuti

Kardamb Muni and God’s Promise

The great sage, Kardamb Muni, was born from Lord Brahma's shadow. Kardamb Muni practiced austerities for many ages, reaching great spiritual heights. One day, God manifested before him and expressed a need for an elevated soul in the Grihastha Ashram (householder life) to produce spiritually elevated progeny. Despite Kardamb's dedication to asceticism, he agreed to marry on one condition: that God would descend as his child. God accepted the condition, promising to manifest as Kardamb Muni’s child in the future.

The Marriage of Kardamb Muni and Devahuti

After receiving divine inspiration, Swayambhuva Manu and Shatarupa took their daughter, Devahuti, to meet Kardamb Muni in the forest. Living in a humble hut, Kardamb Muni warmly welcomed them and offered them three seats. Swayambhuva Manu and Shatarupa sat on two of the seats. Devahuti, feeling conflicted about sitting on the same seat as her future husband, chose to sit on the floor while respectfully placing her hand on the seat, which Kardamb Muni recognized as a sign of her wisdom and humility. He understood her noble nature as she had demonstrated her ability to honor what was offered while choosing the humble option.

The marriage between Kardamb Muni and Devahuti was decided, but Kardamb Muni, being a renunciant, expressed concern about whether Devahuti would be able to adjust to his ascetic lifestyle. Swayambhuva Manu reassured him that his daughter would be comfortable. Kardamb Muni then set a condition: he would only stay in the Grihastha Ashram until a son was born, after which he would depart to continue his spiritual practices. This condition was accepted, and the marriage took place accordingly.

A Life of Devotion and Austerities

After their marriage, Kardamb Muni continued to focus on his spiritual practices, remaining detached from worldly pleasures. He did not pay much attention to his new wife, and Devahuti, in her devotion, silently served him. She followed him with great humility, adhering to the principles of a chaste wife. As time passed, her body began to wither, and she became emaciated from the lack of proper nourishment. Despite this, her dedication never faltered.

Kardamb Muni, engrossed in his austerities, did not initially notice her suffering. However, one day, after returning from his morning ablution, he finally observed her condition. Overcome with remorse for neglecting her, Kardamb Muni realized the selflessness with which Devahuti had served him. Her devotion moved him deeply, and as a result, he used the power of his spiritual austerities to rejuvenate her body, making her not only healthy but exceedingly beautiful, and transformed himself into a remarkably handsome figure as well.

Kardamb Muni also realized the importance of his worldly duties and, by the strength of his austerities, he created an opulent palace for them to live in. They now enjoyed marital bliss, and soon, nine daughters were born to them. However, Kardamb Muni began to reflect on his life again. He had once been a renunciant, but now, surrounded by worldly pleasures, he felt bound by them. After many years, he decided it was time for him to depart once more and resume his spiritual practices.

The Divine Promise Fulfilled

Before leaving, Kardamb Muni shared his decision with Devahuti, who pleaded with him not to abandon her completely. She reassured him that their daughters were competent and could fend for themselves and that God would arrange suitable husbands for them. But she expressed a deep longing for support in her own life.

At that moment, Kardamb Muni remembered the divine promise made to him: that God would descend as his child. Kardamb Muni continued to live with Devahuti for a while, and later on, Kapil Bhagwan, the renowned Sankhya Acharya, was conceived in Devahuti's womb. When Kapil Bhagwan manifested, Kardamb Muni offered his salutations to his divine son. With this, he bid farewell to his wife and departed to continue his spiritual practices.

Devahuti took great care of her son, Kapil Bhagwan, as he grew from a young child into a teenager. During this time, she remained attached to worldly pleasures, However, one day, Devahuti experienced a spiritual awakening and approached her son. This conversation led to the Kapil-Devahuti Samvad, one of the most famous dialogues in the Srimad Bhagavatam.
