Bhagavad Gita for Children
Scriptures Made Easy
Remember, you are precious to God. You are indispensable to His universe, just as the moon and the stars. Play your role as he expects. It’s not important that we do great things; what matters is that we do small things with great love.
– Swami Mukundananda
The above quote from Swamiji captures the essence of bhakti - selfless devotion and service to the Supreme Almighty. And the way to attain bhakti is through knowledge and faith. The best source of cultivating knowledge and faith is the gospel of Truth – “Bhagavad Gita”. Preached by the Supreme Lord Shree Krishna, the Bhagavad Gita entails the essence of highest living.
God has given us the Vedas, the eternal knowledge of God; He has given us the Upanishads, the philosophical section of the Vedas; and He has inspired Sage Ved Vyas to gift humanity with the Brahma Sutras – the philosophical conclusion of Vedic knowledge. For the benefit of mankind, the causelessly merciful Supreme Lord provides us with a comprehensive and easy-to-understand summary of the Vedic philosophy through the Bhagavad Gita. Adi Śankaracharya expresses this beautifully:
sarvopanishado gavo, dogdha gopala-nandanah
partho vatsah su-dhir bhokta, dugdham gitamritam mahat (Gītā Māhātmya 6)
All the Upanishads are like a cow, and the milker of the cow is Lord Krishna, the son of Nanda. Arjun is the calf, the beautiful nectar of the Gita is the milk, and the devotees with a heart full of love for God are the drinkers and enjoyers of that milk.
The secret ingredient
The Bhagavad Gita was preached 5000 years ago by Shree Krishna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra to Arjun. This divine dialogue holds precious nuggets of wisdom within it. The Lord does not simply impart Brahma Vidya – the science of God-realization –but rather endows us with practical spiritual knowledge that can be put into practice in our day-to-day lives. The keyword one must remember is Yog – the union with God. For this reason, it is also called Yog Shastra. Having union with God as the ultimate goal will help us progress in all phases of life - career, family, health and personal growth. It not just strengthens our mind but also helps us achieve peace in this stressful humdrum of life.
Relevance of Bhagavad Gita to Children
In this day and age of materialism and self-indulgence, Bhagavad Gita instils in young ones innumerable virtues. From this holy scripture, one will
- Know duties of human beings
- Understand the purpose of life
- Develop positive thoughts and overcome vices
- Strengthen the eternal relationship with the Almighty
- Practice self-control and develop will power
Apart from these benefits, one can be free from the grossest of mental afflictions such as anger, greed, pride, envy, lust, anxiety, and depression. We forge our relationship with God through His words and grace. We can feel calmness, tolerance, and forgiveness increasing within us.
